  17. CUPERTINO, California--Oct. 25, 1993--Apple Computer Inc. announced
  18. today Macintosh TV, a new product that combines an Apple Macintosh
  19. personal computer, television and CD-ROM stereo system into one
  20. compact, low-priced unit. Designed for users at home and in higher
  21. education institutions, the $2,079 system greatly reduces the cost
  22. and space requirements currently required to obtain these electronic
  23. components separately. This product underscores Apple's business
  24. strategy to reach new users in the home and education markets.
  25.     Macintosh TV provides the integrated functionality of a powerful
  26. personal computer with a cable-ready 14-inch color TV, and double-
  27. speed audio CD player for high-quality stereo sound.  The system can
  28. also be easily connected with a VCR, camcorder, laserdisc player or
  29. video game player. In addition, it comes with a sleek infrared remote
  30. that controls both television and CD player functions.

  32. converging, and Apple is at the forefront of this transition," said
  33. Brodie Keast, Director of Product Marketing for the Apple Personal
  34. Computer Division. "With Macintosh TV, Apple extends its popular all-
  35. in-one computer design with new media capabilities that create a
  36. whole new category of computing and entertainment devices."

  38. more about the needs of this market and to apply that knowledge to
  39. future product development," Keast added.

  41. Bundled Software Included
  42.     Macintosh TV comes bundled with several popular software programs
  43. pre-loaded, including ClarisWorks 2.0 (an integrated program
  44. combining a word processor, spreadsheet and database),
  45.     American Heritage Dictionary, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, HomeWork
  46. Templates, and The Performa Click Art Collection. It also includes
  47. CD-ROM titles such as Groiler's Multimedia Encyclopedia, World Atlas,
  48. Space Shuttle, Wonders of the World (Volume I), Time Almanac 1993, and
  49. the Kodak Photo CD Sampler.

  51. Product Details
  52.     Macintosh TV combines plug-and-play simplicity with the power of a 32
  53. MHz 68030 microprocessor. It comes standard with 5MB of RAM
  54. expandable to 8MB. It has a 160MB hard disk drive and a 1.4MB Apple
  55. SuperDrive floppy disk drive and reads MS-DOS disks with Macintosh PC
  56. Exchange software.
  57.     The television capabilities include a 14-inch Color TV with a cable-
  58. ready tuner, a coaxial port to connect an antenna or cable service
  59. and a RCA port to connect a VCR, camcorder, laserdisc player, or
  60. video game player. The software support for television features
  61. includes frame grabbing, closed captions, channel scanning, and
  62. password protection of TV mode.
  63.     The AppleCD 300i double-speed CD-ROM drive adds more flexibility to
  64. Macintosh TV and provides a richer more exciting computing
  65. environment. This built-in CD-ROM plays standard audio CDs, reads
  66. data on CD-ROMs and views images on Kodak Photo CDs. The system
  67. integrates a high-quality 14" Trinitron color display which provides
  68. 640 by 480 pixels, .26mm dot pitch and 8-bit color, displaying 256
  69. colors.
  70.     The SCSI port will support up to six SCSI devices, such as hard disks
  71. and scanners. There are two serial ports for printers, modems, and
  72. AppleTalk networks. There are also two Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) ports
  73. for keyboard, mouse, and other input devices. Macintosh TV also has
  74. built-in AppleTalk networking and file sharing without a dedicated
  75. server.

  77. Pricing and Availability
  78.     Macintosh TV is a U.S. only, special edition product and will be
  79. available immediately upon introduction at selected consumer retail
  80. stores and higher education campuses, and through the Apple Catalog.
  81. The consumer stores include Best Buy, Select Video Concepts, Silo
  82. YES, and TOPS. The ApplePrice is $2,079.
